Microsoft Dynamics NAV (formerly known as Navision) was an enterprise ERP system from Microsoft designed primarily for small and medium-sized businesses. The system helped manage key business processes, including finance, sales, manufacturing, warehousing, and projects, within a single integrated environment.
Thanks to its flexibility, customization capabilities, and wide range of functionalities, Dynamics NAV was for many years one of the most widely used ERP solutions in its category.
Microsoft Dynamics NAV covered the core areas of business management:
Finance and accounting – general ledger, payables, receivables, banking operations, and financial reporting
Sales and purchasing – order management, pricing conditions, and invoicing
Warehousing and inventory – inventory tracking, warehouse movement management, and stocktaking
Manufacturing and planning – production order management, production planning, and cost calculation
Projects and jobs – tracking project costs and revenues
Reporting and analytics – reports and insights supporting business management
Microsoft Dynamics NAV was gradually replaced by the modern Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central solution, which builds on its functionality and further develops it, including in the cloud environment.
Microsoft no longer sells Dynamics NAV to new customers, and the system's main development has been discontinued. The last versions of the system have entered a limited support phase and are gradually being replaced by the D365 Business Central platform.
For organizations that still use the system, it often makes sense to plan modernization or migration to Dynamics 365 Business Central, which offers a modern cloud architecture, extensibility through so-called Extensions, continuous updates, and broader integration capabilities with other Microsoft tools and third-party products.
